Danny Bliss Obituary

Dan Bliss, of Cumberland, died on April 25.  He was the son of the late Celine (Valois) Bliss and grew up in Woonsocket. He is survived by five siblings: Kate Magnant and her husband Jim of Florida, Tom Bliss of Australia, Sue Bliss of Rhode Island, Judy Oestreicher and her husband Bob of Massachusetts, and Maria Scurry of Massachusetts.

Dan enjoyed life on his own but was always there for family and friends, believing it’s important to “always show up” for each other.  He was a dedicated son, nephew, brother, and uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Dan loved to sail.  He built a wooden boat with his uncle and later went to sailing school and bought his own sailboat.  He enjoyed time at the marina caring for his boat.

Dan was a continuous learner and avid reader who could explain any topic – history, geography, science, math, sports, or music - with detail.  He was a numbers wizard.

Dan was a mechanical engineer who could look at something and understand how it worked or how to fix it by looking at it.  He was the ultimate handyman and problem solver. Yet with all problems he knew there was always “one little thing” that would arise before solving.

Dan loved hikes and walks, and visiting lighthouses where he knew the history of each.

Dan would often listen to sports on the radio – football, hockey, and basketball. A highlight was when he attended the 1986 Boston Celtics playoff game.

Dan had a giving caring spirit and his understated example will live in the hearts of his family and friends.

A burial service will be held at Precious Blood Cemetery in Woonsocket at 11:30 am on Wednesday, May 1.
