James Rainey Obituary

Woonsocket – James “Jay” F. Rainey, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Friendly Home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Debra (Schmidt) Rainey of Woonsocket.

Born in Gardner, MA on June 21, 1951, he was the son of the late Raymond and Theresa (St. Pierre) Rainey.

Following his time at Berklee College of Music, Jay was a self-employed Musician whose passion for music shaped much of his life. He was also a talented artist who found joy in creative expression. Above all, Jay treasured being a loving husband, a devoted father, and a proud grandfather. He loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed participating in outdoor activities and engaging in a variety of games.

In addition to his beloved wife Debra, he is survived by his children, Melissa Chavers and her husband, Robert, of Wrentham, MA; Jason Rainey of Woonsocket; and Lacey Rainey and her wife, Stephanie, of Woonsocket. He is also survived by siblings, Ann Halverson of Cave Creek, AZ; Joan Ares and her husband Steve Ares of Ware, MA; and Roland Rainey of Gardner, MA; and grandchildren, Jason, Ari, Olivia, and Genevieve.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dennis Rainey.

Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friendly Home, 303 Rhodes Ave, Woonsocket, RI 02895. Arrangements are under the direction of the S. DiPardo Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1583 Diamond Hill Road, Woonsocket, RI 02895.
