In Loving Memory
Russell R. Plante
December 31, 1950 - November 3, 2020
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a dear friend, father, brother, and Uncle, Russell “Rusty” Plante of Woonsocket, RI.
Russell Plante passed in the early hours on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Russell fought a years-long battle with health complications, in and out of the hospital, before passing at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, RI. He put up a valiant fight as is unsurprisingly characteristic of Russell. Close friends and family say that Russell reported being unafraid and at peace as he approached his final days.
Like his father before him, Russell worked as a master plumber for many years. And as an accomplished billiards player, he was partner to two pubs where tournaments were routinely held: The Monument Tavern and Boilermakers, both located in Woonsocket, RI. His billiards team, “The Bar Flys,” won many championships and he held its members near and dear to his heart. He was a devoted member of The Italian Workingmen’s Club in Woonsocket, RI. He was an incredible cook, and his award-winning clam chowder was among one of his proudest achievements. He was a truly free-spirit, Russell had taken many trips cross-country and also to Canada in “His Magic Bus.” He was a proud participant of the counter culture and spiritual revolution of the late 1960’s and truly embodied the love that sparked the movement.
Russell enjoyed concerts, cruises, antiques, his favorite comedy trio The Three Stooges, old westerns, and knew every word to “Gunsmoke.” He loved his two fur babies, Jager and Mister. Russell was a natural orator and could always be counted upon to regale us with the greatest stories and memories. His sharp wit, humor, infectious smile, and laughter will truly be missed by all.
Born in Woonsocket, Russell was the son of the late Oscar J. Plante and Georgette Lacey. Russell is survived by long-time partner, Mary Jane Smith of 30 years. His son Mitchell Plante. His brother Richard and wife Leslie Plante and their two daughters Erica and Shelly. Sister-in-law Eileen Plante, wife of his late brother Ronald Oscar Plante, and their two children Jay and Jody Plante and their families. Step-Mother Joyce (Moran) Plante, her son Kurt Courtemanche and wife Karen, their two children Kyle and Kara Courtemanche, Amy (Courtemanche) Skalubinski, her husband Glenn and her two children Emily and Neil Skalubinski, and Drew Courtemanche.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Russell and Mary’s close friends Tracy Charlska and William Montanari for taking such good care of Russell through thick and thin.
Relatives and friends are invited: calling hours are on Saturday, November 14, 2020 from 1-3:00PM in S.DiPardo Memorial Chapel Funeral Home 1583 Diamond Hill Rd. Woonsocket, RI 02895. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
“I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow
of smiles when life on earth is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering
softly down the ways
of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve
to dry before the sun
of memories that I leave
When my life on earth is done.”
